Operator's manual — original car art

The gift

Buying it for somebody else: what a car obsessive already owns, and what they do not.

A garage shelf under a brass lamp holding folded leather driving gloves, a key on a leather fob, old driving goggles, a small brass watch, a rolled rag and a tin, with a dust sheet over something car-shaped below.

Buying for somebody whose interest you don't share is a different problem from buying for yourself, and it's the one most people arriving at this shop are trying to solve. The pages below start from the recipient rather than the product: what a car obsessive has already been given three times, what they haven't, and where a picture is the right answer rather than the default one.

The reading, in order

Back to the beginning

That is the end of the path. If you got here without reading any of it, the car is where it starts, and the shop holds all twenty-eight artworks in one place.
